We recognise that the move from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone for every pupil, and that a carefully planned transition programme can make a real difference to how confident, comfortable and prepared pupils feel when they join us.
At Gowerton School, our four-day transition programme is designed to give pupils the time and opportunity to become familiar with their new surroundings, meet key staff, make new friends and experience the routines and expectations of secondary school before September. Across the four days, pupils follow a structured programme that gradually builds their confidence and independence, allowing them to experience lessons, navigate the school site, meet their new teachers, take part in a range of activities and begin to understand what life at Gowerton will be like. The programme also provides staff with valuable opportunities to get to know pupils, identify any concerns or additional support they may require, and establish positive relationships before they officially join us. By spreading the transition across four days rather than relying on a single visit, we aim to make the move to secondary school feel less daunting and more familiar, ensuring that every pupil has the opportunity to arrive in September feeling confident, prepared, welcomed and ready to begin their Gowerton journey.

We strongly encourage parents and carers to take advantage of the range of transition events offered by Gowerton School, including Open Evenings, Open Mornings and Primary Roadshows.
These opportunities play an important role in helping both pupils and families become familiar with the school, its staff, facilities, routines and expectations before the move to secondary school. Attending together gives parents and carers the opportunity to ask questions, gather important information and develop a better understanding of what life at Gowerton will be like, while pupils can begin to explore the school environment, meet staff and start to picture themselves as part of the school community. For many children, familiarity can significantly reduce uncertainty and anxiety, helping them to feel more confident, comfortable and excited about the move. It also allows parents and carers to feel better informed and more able to support their child throughout the transition. By engaging with these opportunities, families can work in partnership with the school to ensure that the move from primary to secondary is a positive, well-supported and successful experience.
