- The Local Authority regards 95% as the minimum satisfactory attendance for schools.
- Attendance at school is compulsory and is a legal requirement. We appreciate that learners may be unwell on occasions, but it is important that in these instances that you inform the school with the reasons for their absence.
- If you take a two-week holiday in term time your child’s attendance will automatically be reduced to less than 95% and this is without sickness.

5 Tips to help improve attendance
- Help them get their school bag packed the night before and make sure their uniform is ready.
- Get them to bed at a reasonable time.
- Set the alarm clock early enough to allow plenty of time to get ready and have breakfast.
- Remind them to set off for the bus or start walking early, punctuality is important.
- Talk to your child about their learning experiences, if you have any concerns contact your school.
Further Support
- Each school has a dedicated Attendance Officer who is available to support you with your child’s attendance.
- Every school in Swansea has an allocated Education Welfare Officer who visits or contacts the school regularly.
- The School may contact you either by phone, letter or with a home visit to discuss the school’s concerns and how the attendance or punctuality can be improved. If there is no improvement a referral to the EWO will be made.
