Additional Learning Needs

At Gowerton School we ensure that all pupils are given the support, guidance, and provision necessary to enable them to achieve their full potential no matter what their differences are. All pupils study the broad, balanced and relevant curriculum to which they are entitled, and they are included fully in the school community.

Gowerton recognises that all learners have individual needs and ensures equity for all. We promote practice that celebrates diversity and maximises pupil achievement. The school places great emphasis on the 4 core purposes of the Curriculum for Wales developing the whole child and forming positive, supportive and collaborative relationships between staff, pupils and parents/carers as well as the wider community.

What Additional Learning Needs (ALN) means:

A person has Additional Learning Needs if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability (whether the learning difficulty or disability arises from a medical condition or otherwise) which calls for additional learning provision (ALNET (2018) Act).

 The Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (ALNET) states that;

 A person will have ALN if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability which calls for ‘Additional Learning Provision’.

This means if they have ‘a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age

 Or,

Have ‘a disability for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010, which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities for education or training of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream maintained schools or FEI’

At Gowerton we recognise that all learners have individual needs and ensure fair and equitable treatment for all.

We promote a universal practice that celebrates diversity and maximizes the achievement of all.
